Clearly, the sense in which the phrases "due to", "explained by", "accounted for", etc., are used in analysis of variance and regression have nothing to do with their ordinary, causal meanings. I am going to try to avoid using the causal-sounding phrases, because I think they encourage confusion, and instead stick with the vocabulary of "associated with", or at most "described by", because anything stronger is unjustified here - bactra.org
