North Fort Myers 57, Island Coast 0

• North senior quarterback Jesse Charles ran for close to 100 yards and two touchdowns and threw for four touchdowns in a homecoming rout of Island Coast in the Class 6A-District 10 opener for both teams.

• The Red Knights scored on seven of their first eight drives. Meanwhile the defensive line got a consistent push up front in a dominant defensive effort to follow a solid effort against a talented Palmetto Ridge team last week.

• “We’re 2-2 right now, 2-2 is .500 and that’s not acceptable for us,” North first-year coach Dwayne Mack said. “We’ve got to try and get the guys going in the right direction, so we can have a winning season and return to the playoffs.”

• The game was out of reach and went to a running clock at the start of the third with North leading 43-0. Clayton Savinsky had two touchdown receptions while Shomari Mason ran for a score and caught a touchdown pass.

• The Gators are 0-4, but coach Jim Wiseman said the team is making strides. “The kids are understanding there is a way to prepare, a way to go about business of putting yourself in position to make plays and win football games. We’re getting better by leaps and bounds. We’re just going to keep working and try to get better.”

Records: North Fort Myers (2-2, 1-0 district); Island Coast (0-4, 0-1 district)

Cypress Lake 44, Mariner 34

At Cypress Lake

• Cypress Lake’s Jayson Riches was taken off on a stretcher with 2:32 remaining in the third quarter.  Riches was injured on Rashawn Hunter’s 10-yard touchdown for Mariner. After a long time lying on the goal line, Riches was placed on a stretcher and then into an ambulance.  Panthers coach Richie Rode said the injury was a broken leg. At the time Riches was injured, Mariner had pulled within 34-28 in the Class 5A-District 12 opener for both teams. “It’s such a close-knit group and he’s such a popular player,” Rode said. “They (his teammates) did a good job using that as positive emotion. They’ll deal with it now and some of the sadness now, and they’ll go visit him.  But in the moment, they did a good job.”

• Chris Joseph ran for 174 yards and four touchdowns on 15 carries to propel the Panthers.  CJ Shedd threw for two Cypress Lake touchdowns.

• For Mariner, Cade Reynolds rushed for 157 yards and a TD, and Hunter carried 16 times for 107 yards and three touchdowns.  Hunter also hit Erickson Noel on a 60-yard TD pass. “They had some big plays,” Rode said. “They’ve been doing that to everyone. We’ve got some young kids on the back end, and we don’t expect that to be an excuse but it’s a learning experience.”

• Mariner fumbled three times, although the Tritons recovered all three.  One fumble wound up as a 23-yard Tritons loss as players on both sides dove and batted at the ball back before Mariner finally regained possession.

• Although not a single drop of rain fell, lightning delayed the game for an hour and 48 minutes.  There was another lengthy delay as paramedics attended to Riches. As a result, the game didn’t end until well after midnight.

Records: Mariner (2-1, 0-1 district), Cypress Lake (3-1, 1-0 district)

Bishop Verot 59, First Baptist 14

At First Baptist

• Bishop Verot recorded a statement win with a rout of FloridaHSFootball.com's No. 5 team in Class 2A. The 59 points were the most scored by a Verot team since a 68-point effort against St. Pete Catholic in 2002, when now-head coach Josh Vogelbach was the quarterback.

• Tailback Terry Lindsey scored on three short touchdown runs in the first half, helping the Vikings to a 45-8 lead after 24 minutes. The junior finished with 115 yards on 21 carries

• Jacob Azizi tossed three touchdowns for the Vikings, all more than 20 yards. Tequon Chatman, Jaidin Brown, and Brock Gee all hauled in scores from the sophomore signal-caller.

• Thomas Casey was a bright spot for the Lions, rushing for 113 yards on 16 carries, most of which came in the first half. 67 of those yards came on a touchdown run that put FBA on the board.

• A muffed punt set up First Baptist's final score of the game, a 6-yard touchdown run by Jimmy Ridinger.

LaBelle 34, Oasis 33

Cape Coral Storm Football Complex

• LaBelle senior Enrique Hernandez turned into a one-man wrecking crew for the Cowboys.  He  scored the game-tying touchdown on a 44 yard punt return before kicking the go-ahead extra point with 2:30 to go in the third quarter.  He closed out the final Oasis threat with an interception with less than a minute to go.

• Cowboy quarterback Bryce Hall scored on a 56-yard, first-quarter touchdown romp and tossed an 85-yard TD bomb (4-for-8-1 132) to Hernandez in the second quarter.

• Junior Oasis quarterback Daniel Rennie (20-for-29-3, 209 yards) tossed two touchdown passes to junior wide out Ashton Roy of 19 and 72 yards.

• LaBelle’s fourth-quarter defense was the undoing of Oasis. Cowboy senior linebacker Tyler Vahle made two big sacks to go along with an Augustine Perez interception and the Hernandez pick.

• Oasis was penalized 15 times for 106 yards including a tough unsportsmanlike call on the coaching staff with four minutes to go in the game when Sharks’ receiver Weston Wilson was decked crossing the middle of the Cowboy defense. The call pushed Oasis outside the red zone and that drive ended with a missed field-goal attempt of 53 yards.

Palmetto Ridge 46, Estero 21

At Palmetto Ridge

• Running back Leonel Garza carried the load for Palmetto Ridge. Garza had a whopping 33 carries for 184 yards and two touchdowns. That's 20 more carries and 88 more yards than the rest of the Bears.

• Palmetto Ridge's defense was stifling against Estero's running game. The Bears allowed just 10 Wildcats rushing yards. It would've been much worse, but Estero quarterback Tanner Elliott had a 39-yard scramble. The Bears had nine tackles for losses.

• Estero was in this for a half. The Wildcats trailed just 17-14 at intermission. But Palmetto Ridge had two long scoring drives in the third quarter to build a 32-14 lead and the Bears mostly easily cruised from there.

•  Elliott had a mixed-bag game. He completed 17 of 36 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns. But the big majority of that came in the first half and he suffered three interceptions.

• Wildcats receiver Myles Alceus had a monster first half. Showing fantastic hands and nice quickness, he had five receptions for 110 yards at intermission. He had no second-half receptions.

Records: Palmetto Ridge 1-2, Estero 0-4

Next games: Sept. 21 -- Estero at Gulf Coast, 7 p.m.; Palmetto Ridge at South Fort Myers, 7:30 p.m.
